Under the hood, there have been big improvements to the latest Corolla. In 2019, the base model engine was a 132 horsepower 1.8-liter powerplant, which could be upgraded to 140 horsepower on the ECO models. For the 2020 Corolla, you still get a 1.8-liter engine to start with, but even it produces more starting power at 139 horsepower. If you are looking for an upgrade, the SE models (SE and XSE), both employ a 160-horsepower 2.0-liter engine that’s entirely new to the Corolla lineup.
Perhaps more interestingly, it’s this powerful 2.0-liter engine that gives the Toyota Corolla its best efficiency. Though it doesn’t blow the previous model year out of the water, it does offer an improvement and you get 20 additional horsepower to play around with.
When it comes to features, the 2019 Toyota Corolla was already fully-loaded, but the 2020 model still found several places to improve. For starters, the 2020 Corolla now adds Apple CarPlay and you get it as a standard feature. Now you and your phone can safely stay connected. On top of that, with standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 you get a lot of safety features over the 2019 model including an improved pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane tracing, and even road sign assist.
